KOA Report: Campers Crave Immersive Travel Experiences in 2024

The Camping Trips and Travel Experience report by Kampgrounds of America (KOA), released on June 17, highlights the latest trends in camping and travel experiences. The report reveals a strong desire among campers to share immersive natural experiences with friends and family while also taking time to slow down and enjoy the moment.

The report indicates that campers are seeking a balance of activities, including enjoying an adult beverage by a campfire, fishing, hiking, taking scenic drives, bird watching, stargazing, and visiting historical sites.

New adventures are also on the rise, with increased interest in overlanding and backcountry camping. Notably, glamping led to first-time camping experiences in 2023, with 32% of campers trying it for the first time.

Another aspect of the findings is shifting travel patterns. Shoulder and off-peak travel increased by 21%, while peak-season travel saw a 4% decline. Factors such as overcrowding and inclement weather contribute to this change. Additionally, winter camping has gained popularity, with one in four active camping households participating in the 2023/2024 winter season.

According to the report, 86% of RVers use their RVs for diverse activities, including outdoor recreation, visiting friends, and attending festivals and events. RV enthusiasts also highlighted that RV travel offers both spontaneity and a heightened sense of safety and security.

Toby O’Rourke, president and CEO of KOA, explained that as outdoor enthusiasts increasingly seek diverse and elevated experiences, the latest reports provide valuable insights into the changing landscape of camping.

“For the past decade, KOA has utilized findings from our research to modernize and evolve within the camping landscape, allowing us to be the leaders in outdoor hospitality. This targeted report on travel experiences will ensure our industry continues to meet and exceed expectations of our guests to create safe, fun, and fulfilling experiences for years to come,” O’Rourke said.

The report also highlights 10-year trends in camping accommodations. RV ownership has doubled since 2014, with 77% of RVers traveling in RVs they personally own. In 2023, an estimated 1.7 million households rented an RV, a number projected to rise to 1.9 million in the coming year.

For the first time since 2014, there was a decline in the number of households tent camping.

In addition to increased RV ownership, blended travel, where campers combine trips with other accommodations, is becoming more common. As noted in the report, 92% of campers combine camping with stays at hotels, resorts, hunting or fishing camps, or lodges.

Looking ahead to 2024, campers express a desire to slow down and simply enjoy the experience. Nearly half (48%) of campers prioritize spending more time with family and friends, making it the most important consideration for travel. Additionally, popular outdoor trips include stays at outdoor resorts designed for glamping and campgrounds offering extensive services and amenities.
