Kentucky summers are famously hot, inspiring phrases like “hotter than a billy goat in a pepper patch,” but the Bluegrass State also offers plenty of ways to stay cool outdoors.
According to an article by Islands, among the most refreshing spots is Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park, a sprawling 873-acre retreat in Dawson Springs, tucked within a forest spanning over 14,000 acres.
The park features a 56-acre reservoir perfect for boating, fishing, or swimming, as well as shaded lake trails for leisurely walks.
Visitors can also enjoy tennis, horseshoes, or miniature golf. Country-style cottages and seasonal camping options allow guests to extend their stay, and the park’s dazzling white sand beach is a highlight not to be missed.
Located nearly two hours from Nashville, the park provides a peaceful escape far from city crowds.
Hiking is a major draw, with nine trails weaving through the park. The 2.3-mile Pennyrile Lake Trail loops beneath oak, maple, and hickory trees, offering sweeping views of the lake and opportunities to spot birds such as mourning doves, chimney swifts, and downy woodpeckers.
Wooden bridges and waterfalls add to the scenic experience, though visitors should exercise caution on steep or muddy sections.
Sports and recreation are abundant. The park’s 18-hole golf course includes a pro shop, rental clubs, and carts, while basketball and tennis courts and an outdoor swimming pool are also available.
Mini-golf is located near the campground for a fun family activity. Non-motorized boating is encouraged on the lake, with canoes, kayaks, pedal boats, and rowboats available for rent. Motorboats are not allowed, ensuring a peaceful paddling experience.
The boat dock is conveniently located next to the swim beach, making it easy to take a refreshing dip after boating.
The swim beach is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day and features a gently sloped shore and golden sand.
Accommodations include Pennyrile Lodge, a rustic lakeside lodge with 24 rooms on a cliff overlooking the water, and cottages equipped with charcoal grills.
The lodge offers continental breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and some rooms are pet-friendly.
The campground is open from April through October, accommodating up to eight guests per site, and allows one camper unit and one tent—or two tents if no camper is brought.
Firewood is available for sale, with USDA-stamped or heat-treated wood required for out-of-state visitors to prevent the spread of invasive insects.
There is no general admission fee to explore the park’s grounds, and seniors over 62 receive a 10% discount on lodging and camping.
Pets are welcome on trails, provided they are leashed, though service animals are the only ones allowed at designated swim areas.
With a combination of shaded trails, lake activities, and welcoming accommodations, Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park is a top destination for outdoor enthusiasts looking to beat the heat while enjoying Kentucky’s natural beauty.
