Carter Caves State Resort Park campground in Carter County is undergoing a $3.8 million renovation aimed at enhancing amenities and drawing new travelers to the region.
The project is part of Gov. Andy Beshear’s New Kentucky Home initiative, which seeks to bolster the state’s tourism economy through significant investments in outdoor hospitality.
During the 2024 legislative session, the General Assembly approved $40 million in funding for campground improvements statewide.
Gov. Beshear signed the legislation to release the funds, highlighting the role of Kentucky’s state parks in boosting economic development and creating memorable visitor experiences.
“Our Kentucky State Parks offer unique outdoor opportunities, and these improvements will create unforgettable camping experiences for guests visiting our New Kentucky Home,” Beshear said, as reported by The Ironton Tribune on June 20.
“By investing in our state parks, we are creating a brighter future for Kentucky for future generations to enjoy,” Beshear added.
Renovation plans for Carter Caves include building a new campground store and bathhouse, adding more sewer sites, and upgrading electric and water lines throughout the park. These upgrades are intended to modernize the campground’s infrastructure and ensure visitors have reliable access to essential services.
The campground will also close temporarily for the 2025 camping season while construction is underway.
Work is scheduled to be completed by late 2025, allowing the park to reopen with enhanced facilities in time for the following season.
“Carter Caves State Resort Park attracts outdoor enthusiasts far and wide, and these enhancements will only drive more visitors to our parks,” said Kentucky State Parks Commissioner Russ Meyer.
He emphasized the project as part of the state’s commitment to providing modern, high-quality accommodations for guests.
Local tourism officials see the project as a major step forward for the area’s economy. “The campground at Carter Caves State Resort Park is a crown jewel of Carter County’s largest tourist attraction,” said Carter County Tourism Director Chris Perry.
He added that the improvements reflect the Department of Parks’ responsiveness to community feedback and visitor needs.
Revenue generated by the park’s tourism supports other local events and attractions, helping position Carter County as a year-round destination for both residents and out-of-state travelers.
Carter Caves State Resort Park, located at 344 Caveland Drive in Olive Hill, is also known for its limestone cave systems, hiking trails, and various outdoor activities such as rock climbing, paddling, and gem mining.
