Swiss Valley Park and Campground Reopens After Weekend Flooding

The Swiss Valley Park and Campground in Dubuque County (Iowa) has reopened following a temporary closure caused by heavy rain and flooding that forced campers to evacuate over the weekend.

Several inches of rain fell, causing Catfish Creek to overflow and flood low-lying areas. Officials said tent campers at Swiss Valley Nature Preserve were evacuated as a safety precaution.

The Dubuque County Conservation Department announced that the park and campground had reopened after safety inspections were completed. “Swiss Valley Park and Campground are now open! Stay tuned for updates on when the Swiss Valley Preserve will be opened,” Dubuque County Conservation states in a Facebook post.

According to an article published by Iowa News Now, the closure was first announced on Monday (August 11), with conservation staff citing the need to examine damage to the park’s facilities and grounds before allowing visitors to return.

The campground is a popular destination for both local residents and travelers, offering access to hiking and fishing along Catfish Creek.

However, the Swiss Valley Nature Preserve, located nearby, remains closed.

Swiss Valley Park, located 4.5 miles southwest of Dubuque, spans 65 acres along the spring-fed Catfish Creek. The park offers a scenic natural setting for outdoor recreation, with opportunities to enjoy both open green spaces and wooded areas. Its location along the meandering creek makes it a popular destination for visitors seeking a mix of leisure and activity.

The park features a variety of amenities, including camping facilities, fishing areas, disc golf, pavilions, restrooms, and trails. Access to fresh water is available, supporting both campers and day visitors. The combination of open fields and shaded areas makes it suitable for gatherings, events, and individual activities throughout the year.

Picnic areas are also placed in family-friendly settings across the park. These spots are located near frisbee golf courses, playgrounds, rocky creek banks, and sports fields, encouraging both active play and relaxation.
