Small, Solar Facility Has Big Benefits For Iowa Campground

In the course of Clean Energy Week, Iowa Lieutenant Governor Adam Gregg’s final visit was to the solar power facility at Valley View Campground near Green Valley Lake that Bill Bolinger owns, a report said.

Iowa is number one in the wind, and one number one in biofuels and solar is growing,” Gregg stated following a tour of the solar plant that produces 45 Kilowatts. “And there is hydroelectric in Lake Red Rock. These are all good developments,” he added.

Looking for ways to cut down on utility bills following the campground’s opening in 2019, Bolinger began constructing the solar power facility in the following year and then flipped the power switch in February of 2020.

“I needed to do something different,” he explained.

Although the solar generator is not designed to power his campsite, it does provide power to the grid that he can benefit from. Since he installed this solar device, the electricity bill has been at a minimum of $19 in some months.

It’s not always that inexpensive since cooling units in the campsite are expected to raise the price. However, the costs are more affordable.

“The project has met expectations,” the director stated.

Bolinger’s solar project was aided with the help of 1 Source Solar of Ankeny. The firm offers solar-facility analysis and design, engineering, and construction for agricultural, commercial, and residential. The firm has been operating for seven years.

The company representative Angie Berhow said solar-powered devices such as those at the campsite are a “set it and forget it,” similar approach.

Bolinger can keep track of his solar panels using an app for smartphones that tracks the mechanical aspects of the device and identifies when issues occur.

Berhow stated that the price of building solar-powered facilities is on the rise, “but it still makes sense” to create one. Berhow said that Bolinger’s project comes with a 25-year guarantee, and the whole operation is expected to last 40 years.

Gregg stated that the expansion of the energy industry in Iowa would only increase the diversification of Iowa’s economy.
