The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is reopening Maquoketa Caves State Park today, July 28. This comes less than a week since three family members were killed inside the campground on Friday, July 22.
As per a report, while the park is expected to open today, the campground will be closed until further notice. Campground reservation holders through Sunday, July 31, will have their money refunded.
A temporary memorial is in place in honor of the Schmidt family at the Maquoketa Caves State Park entrance sign near the Visitor Center. The couple’s nine-year-old son survived the attack.
The Iowa DNR continues to work with the Department of Public Safety, local law enforcement, and other agencies to learn more about the attack.
According to Iowa DNR’s website, Maquoketa Caves is one of Iowa’s most unique outdoor attractions.
The state park has amenities including a museum and interpretive display, a visitor center, restrooms, showers, a playground, shelters, standard electric campsites, walk-to/non-electric campsites, youth group campsites, hiking trails, and more.
