Linn County Conservation Modern Campgrounds to Close for the Season October 26 – Google Docs

Linn County Conservation (Iowa) announced that all modern campgrounds and dump stations will close for the season on Sunday, October 26 at 1 p.m. The last night for camping will be Saturday, October 25.

The seasonal closure will affect modern campgrounds located at Buffalo Creek Park, Morgan Creek Park, Pinicon Ridge Park, and Wanatee Park.

According to the county, the annual shutdown allows for proper maintenance and winterization of facilities before colder temperatures arrive.

“If temperatures are forecast to fall below freezing on a given night prior to the closure date, water may be shut off and will not be operational until next camping season,” the announcement indicates.

“This would also affect showerhouse and dump station usage,” the announcement adds.

This precautionary measure is taken to prevent damage to water lines and infrastructure caused by freezing temperatures, which are common during late October in the region.

At Morgan Creek Park, only self-contained units—campers equipped with internal toilets—are permitted for the remainder of the season. The park’s showerhouse and restroom building are closed to the public due to ongoing renovations.

“The showerhouse/restroom building at Morgan Creek Park Campground is undergoing scheduled renovations and is closed to the public,” the press release states. Campers using the site must therefore rely on facilities within their own units.

While the modern campgrounds prepare for winter, Linn County Conservation reminded visitors that year-round camping remains available at select primitive sites across the county.

These include Matsell Bridge Natural Area primitive campgrounds, Wakpicada Natural Area, and the Wickiup Hill Learning Center Pack-In Campsite.

Primitive sites offer an alternative for outdoor enthusiasts seeking off-grid camping experiences through the winter months. However, these locations do not provide electricity or running water, emphasizing a more rustic approach to camping.

The Matsell Bridge Equestrian Campground will remain open until November 15, weather permitting. The extended timeline accommodates equestrian campers who continue to use the area into late fall.

Linn County Conservation’s staggered closure schedule helps balance maintenance needs while ensuring some recreational access throughout the colder months.
