Green Bay Campground on Lake Pend Oreille will reopen for the first time since 2022, with the U.S. Forest Service announcing that reservations will be accepted online beginning at 7 a.m. Friday (July 25) via recreation.gov.
According to an article published by The Spokesman-Review on July 22, the campground, located about 17 miles southeast of Sandpoint, had been closed due to the absence of a site host. The campground typically opens earlier in the summer, but a lack of staff delayed the process.
The Idaho Panhandle National Forest confirmed the reopening in a Facebook post, noting that while the first reservable date is Aug. 1, sites will be available on a first-come, first-served basis until then.

“This year, the campsites will be 100 percent reservable in advance,” the announcement indicates. Campsites at Green Bay Campground will be available for $15 per night, with an additional administrative booking fee applied through the recreation.gov reservation website.
The campground will remain open through Sept. 27.
This year’s delayed opening follows a full-season closure in 2023 when the Forest Service undertook renovations at the site. The improvements included expanding the number of campsites from 12 to 17 to better accommodate demand.
“Green Bay Campground closed last year for renovations, and its reopening this year has been delayed. The campground expanded from 12 sites to 17 sites, added a campground host site, more vault toilets, expanded parking and underwent road improvements,” the U.S. Forest Service states.
According to its website, Green Bay Campground offers basic amenities, including restrooms, but does not provide potable water. Recreational opportunities at the site include picnicking, swimming, and water-based activities such as motorized boating, making it a popular destination for those seeking access to Lake Pend Oreille’s scenic shoreline.
