Muscatine County to Reveal New Campground Development at Deep Lakes Park

Muscatine County Conservation Foundation, in collaboration with the Muscatine County Conservation Board, is set to unveil its latest campground project at Deep Lakes Park on Monday, October 21.

The event will take place at the Environmental Learning Center, located at 3300 Cedar Street in Muscatine, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. The public announcement aims to showcase the upcoming development.

Deep Lakes Park, a 435-acre site on the south side of Muscatine, was previously a sand and gravel quarry before its donation to Muscatine County Conservation by W.G. Block in 2012. The Conservation Board has worked to enhance the park’s amenities and offer diverse recreational opportunities. The new campground project represents the latest in a series of developments designed to elevate the park’s appeal for visitors and locals alike.

The park is known for its 120 acres of deep, clear lakes, providing an ideal environment for outdoor enthusiasts to explore. The lakes have become a popular spot for fishing, swimming, and boating, attracting visitors throughout the year. Lake Chester, the largest lake in the park, is also equipped with a boat landing, an accessible fishing dock, and a public swimming beach.

For those interested in exploring the lakes further, kayaks are available for rent through the Conservation Office, with reservations required at least three days in advance. The park’s design includes parking lots and entry points on all four sides, allowing easy access for visitors engaged in fishing, paddling, or relaxing by the water.

In addition to the upcoming campground project, Deep Lakes Park offers four reservable cabins for those seeking an extended stay. These cabins, accessible via Pettibone Avenue, include two two-bedroom units accommodating up to eight guests each and two one-bedroom units for groups of up to four. The cabins provide a scenic view overlooking Valentine Chute or Lake Patricia, balancing comfort and immersion in nature.

Each cabin is also outfitted with a full kitchen featuring a stove, refrigerator, microwave, and other small appliances, allowing guests the convenience of cooking during their stay. The living rooms have a television and local cable, while Wi-Fi access enables guests to stay connected or stream entertainment. These amenities, combined with temperature control, make the cabins comfortable for visitors regardless of the season.

According to an article published by West Liberty Index, for those who prefer an active outdoor experience, the park features a 1.25-mile hard-surfaced trail that bisects the area and connects to the Greater Muscatine trail system. This trail network offers cyclists and hikers opportunities to extend their adventures beyond the park’s boundaries.
