RV Technical Institute Hosts Elkhart Community School Students for Hands-On Industry Tour

The RV Technical Institute (RVTI) in Elkhart, Indiana, welcomed students from the Elkhart Community School’s Young Adult Program for a facility tour on Wednesday, February 4.

The visit provided students, ages 18 to 22, who have graduated with alternative diplomas, with an opportunity to engage directly with the RV industry while building job readiness, community participation, and daily living skills.

Mary Smith, the institute’s recruitment administrator, guided the tour, introducing the students to instructors and the facility’s workshop.

The students explored hands-on learning stations, including electrical boards, where they discovered how to operate lights and fans through wiring exercises.

The group also toured the interior of an RV parked on site, gaining practical exposure to the work environment of professional RV technicians. The experience aimed to demonstrate the technical and mechanical tasks associated with the field.

“The RV Technical Institute enjoyed hosting the Elkhart Community School’s Young Adult Program and guiding them on a tour of our facility,” Smith said in a News and Insights report of RVIA on February 12. “The students loved visiting the location, meeting the staff, and operating the equipment.”

“The tour also allowed us to introduce them to the RV world, as well as the wider skilled trades. It was a pleasure meeting them and providing an enjoyable and educational experience,” Smith added.

The Young Adult Program is designed to support students with disabilities in continuing education beyond high school, providing structured instruction in vocational skills alongside community engagement activities.

RVTI visit gave participants a tangible connection to career pathways in skilled trades.

The tour was part of the institute’s broader efforts to engage with the Elkhart community and promote awareness of opportunities in the RV sector.

Students were able to interact directly with tools and equipment used by RV technicians, bridging classroom learning with applied technical experience.

In addition to electrical and mechanical demonstrations, students observed workshop operations, equipment handling, and general facility workflows, offering a comprehensive overview of the daily responsibilities of RV professionals.

By providing hands-on experiences, the institute aimed to inspire interest in vocational careers while supporting the developmental goals of the Young Adult Program.
