Revitalized Beardstown Campground Welcomes Campers After Extensive Renovations

The JBS Beardstown Harbor Campground (Illinois), following a comprehensive two-year renovation period, is now accepting reservations, marking a major milestone in the development of local recreational facilities.

The freshly revitalized campground, which had its preliminary opening during the last week of April, is now fully operational, according to Beardstown Mayor Tim Harris.

“We are excited to provide a place for campers in Beardstown,” Harris said, highlighting the availability of an online reservation system designed for user convenience.

The completion of the seven-campsite project is the result of years of meticulous planning and hard work, making it an achievement that Mayor Harris is particularly proud of.

The campground’s layout includes six standard camping spots and one site compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, reflecting the city’s commitment to inclusivity. Campsite rentals are set at a competitive $35 per night, with the pavilion available at $50 per night.

Significantly, the Beardstown campground project was the beneficiary of a $400,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources’ Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development in 2019. The funds were used to develop the campground with essential facilities, a handicap-accessible playground, a fishing pier, a walking path, and a nature-observation deck.

The campground’s location in a floodway necessitated obtaining special permits and adherence to stringent regulations, a process that extended the project’s timeline, Mayor Harris explained.

While a few minor adjustments are still underway, such as the resolution of a lighting issue in a bathhouse, these do not hinder the campground’s operation or its readiness for guests. Mayor Harris assured that these final touches, including the arrival of special lighting components, are being expedited.

Mayor Harris expressed optimism about the campground’s potential impact on the community. “I think it’ll be used a lot once it takes off,” he said. “This is something else to draw new people to Beardstown and another place for recreation for our residents.”

Reservations for the JBS Beardstown Harbor Campground can be made through its official website at BeardstownHarbor.org.
