Illinois has taken a significant step in promoting electric vehicle (EV) adoption by installing its first public EV charging stations at state parks, a move that could inspire campground and RV park owners to consider similar initiatives. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) has partnered with EVBox to install 40 EV charging stations across various state parks and recreation areas according to a news release by EVBOX.
These installations include locations such as Frank Holten State Recreation Area, Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area, Washington County State Recreation Area, and Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area. The project aims to encourage EV adoption and make it more convenient for EV owners to visit these natural attractions, aligning with Illinois‘ commitment to expanding its EV charging infrastructure.
The donated chargers are Level 2 stations, typically capable of charging vehicles in 4-10 hours. This strategic placement in popular state parks is expected to boost tourism while supporting the state’s environmental goals and promoting sustainable transportation options across Illinois.
As more states across the U.S. look to expand their EV charging networks, Illinois’ initiative serves as a model for integrating charging infrastructure into recreational areas. This approach not only supports EV owners but also raises awareness about electric vehicles among park visitors, potentially encouraging wider adoption of this eco-friendly transportation option.
