Idaho to Add Tent-Only Campground Along Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes

The Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation (IDPR), in partnership with the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), has begun construction on a new tent-only campground along the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes, a 73-mile paved pathway that spans from Mullan to Plummer in North Idaho.

The 26-site campground is designed for non-motorized travelers, including cyclists and pedestrians, offering an overnight option tailored to their needs. Located just north of the Shoshone County Airport, the site is positioned to serve trail users seeking convenient and low-impact accommodations.

Amenities at the campground will include secure bike parking, potable water, a shower house, E-bike charging stations, and hammock posts.

The project is intended to enhance the trail experience while supporting regional tourism and outdoor recreation.

The land for the campground, approximately 140 acres, is owned by DEQ and was formerly part of the Bunker Hill Superfund site. It has been transferred to IDPR through a land-use agreement, marking a shift toward public recreation on rehabilitated land.

“The Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes is one of the most scenic pathways in the country,” IDPR indicates, as reported by DailyFly on July 8.

“This project provides visitors a safe, dedicated place to camp and experience the beauty of North Idaho in a low-impact, sustainable way,” the press release indicates.

According to its website, the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes is a 73-mile paved pathway that stretches across the Idaho panhandle from Mullan to Plummer.

Recognized as one of the top 25 trails in the nation by the Rails to Trails Conservancy in 2010, it offers asphalt ideal for cyclists, in-line skaters, walkers, wheelchair users, Nordic skiers, snowshoers, and wildlife observers.

The trail accommodates both recreational and accessible use, enhancing its appeal to a broad range of outdoor enthusiasts.

Developed through a partnership among the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, Union Pacific Railroad, the U.S. government, and the State of Idaho, the trail winds through the historic Silver Valley, follows the Coeur d’Alene River, passes scenic Lake Coeur d’Alene, and continues through farmlands to Plummer.

It features 20 developed trailheads and 20 scenic waysides with picnic tables and rest areas. Class 1 and 2 E-bikes are permitted, supporting a variety of user experiences along the route.
