Harbinger Launches Plug-In Hybrid for Medium-Duty Fleets

Harbinger, a medium-duty electric and hybrid vehicle manufacturer, has introduced a new plug-in hybrid chassis designed to serve commercial fleets with demanding range requirements.

The vehicle combines an electric drivetrain with a gas-powered range extender, offering an estimated 500 miles of range between charges. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2026, with pre-orders now open to customers.

The company’s new model is a series hybrid, meaning the gasoline engine does not drive the wheels but instead powers an 800-volt generator that recharges the battery system.

Customers can choose between a 140 or 175 kilowatt-hour battery pack, and the hybrid platform supports rapid DC fast charging, reaching up to 80%  capacity in one hour.

“Medium-duty vehicles serve an incredibly diverse range of applications, just like the fleets and operators that rely on them,” said John Harris, co-founder and CEO of Harbinger. “There are some fleets whose needs simply can’t be met with a purely electric vehicle—and we recognize that.”

The hybrid chassis is built on Harbinger’s stripped platform, which includes the full electric powertrain, braking, steering, battery system, and range extender engine. The configuration was designed to accommodate a wide array of commercial uses, including delivery vans, RVs, emergency vehicles, and disaster response units.

Equipped with a 1.4-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine and a 50-gallon fuel tank, the hybrid model delivers 440 horsepower and up to 1,140 pound-feet of torque.

All components are engineered and assembled in-house at Harbinger’s facility in Garden Grove, California.

Harbinger has partnered with Panasonic Energy to supply battery cells for the hybrid and all-electric platforms. Initially, Panasonic will deliver lithium-ion cells produced in Japan, with plans to transition to U.S.-made cells from its facility in De Soto, Kansas.

The hybrid platform is already being adopted by recreational vehicle manufacturer THOR Industries, which owns brands such as Airstream, Jayco, Tiffin and Thor Motor Coach.

The unveiling follows Harbinger’s announcement that it had begun serial production of its first 100 chassis units.
