Great Smoky Mountains National Park Reaches Annual Visitor Spending of $2.19 Billion

According to a new report from the National Park Service, visitors to national parks across the United States spent $26.4 billion in 2023. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park between Tennessee and North Carolina topped the list for economic impact, generating $2.19 billion in visitor spending. 

National parks continue to be a significant driver of local economies, with millions of visitors flocking to these protected areas each year. In 2023, national park visitation increased by 4%, reaching over 325 million visits. This growth in visitation has provided an economic boost to nearby businesses, particularly in sectors like lodging, restaurants, and recreational services.

Lodging emerged as the biggest beneficiary of national park tourism, with visitors spending $9.9 billion on accommodations such as hotels, glamping sites, and campgrounds. Restaurants also saw substantial gains, with $5.2 billion spent on dining, while gas stations and recreational services generated $2.8 billion and $2.2 billion.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, with over 13 million recreational visits in 2023, continues to be the most visited in the country. According to an article published by Forbes, its popularity can be attributed to its year-round attractions, from autumn foliage to unique events like the synchronous firefly lottery in May and June. 

Second place is the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in California, where visitors contributed $1.51 billion in spending. This diverse park offers various activities, from hiking in redwood forests to exploring historic sites like Alcatraz. 

Blue Ridge Parkway, spanning Virginia and North Carolina, generated $1.39 billion in visitor spending. Known for its scenic drives and connections to other national parks like Shenandoah and the Great Smoky Mountains, the parkway remains a place for road trip enthusiasts.

Arizona’s Grand Canyon National Park ranked fourth, with $768.41 million in annual visitor spending. Visitors enjoy glamping experiences near the park, offering a luxury twist to their outdoor adventures. The Grand Canyon attracts millions of visitors annually.

Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming rounds out the top five with $737.98 million in visitor spending. The park’s landscapes and outdoor activities, such as hiking and rafting, make it a destination for nature lovers. Nearby Jackson Hole also offers a range of lodging options.
