Grandymoons Gain Ground as Go RVing Highlights Multigenerational Travel Trend

Go RVing has spotlighted “Grandymoons” as a rising trend in family travel, encouraging grandparents and their families to take trips together in recreational vehicles.

The campaign aims to show how RV travel can strengthen family bonds while offering flexibility and affordability for travelers of all ages.

A Grandymoon, according to Go RVing, is a vacation that celebrates the role of grandparents and the special bond they share with their grandchildren. These trips provide an opportunity for families to thank older generations for their support while creating new memories on the road.

Interest in multigenerational travel has grown steadily in recent years. The Family Travel Association’s 2023 Annual Family Travel Survey found that more than half of parents plan to travel with their children and their parents. This trend has created new opportunities for campgrounds and RV parks to attract families looking for unique experiences.

Grandparents often drive the planning for these trips. According to the same survey, 54% of grandparents say they organize multigenerational vacations, and nearly half have taken such a trip in the last three years.

Another 40% say they intend to do so in the next three years.

RVs are also well-positioned to become a preferred option for Grandymoon travelers. The ability to carry personal belongings, set flexible itineraries, and maintain a comfortable environment appeals to grandparents who value convenience and control during family trips.

“Grandparents are able to control the environment, such as the temperature and noise levels,” the campaign noted in a News and Insights report of RVIA, highlighting one of the key draws of RV travel for older family members.

For campground owners and operators, this trend presents an opportunity to cater to the needs of multigenerational groups. Amenities that appeal to all ages, accessible facilities, and family-friendly activities can help properties attract and retain this growing market segment.

Affordability is another factor driving interest in RV-based Grandymoons. RV vacations can cost less than traditional hotel stays or international trips, even when fuel and maintenance expenses are included.

Go RVing plans to increase awareness of the Grandymoon trend through partnerships and promotions. The organization is working with AARP to release an article later this year and is sponsoring trips for influencers such as Grandma Joy, who, along with her grandson Brad, has visited all 63 U.S. national parks.
