According to the RV Industry Association‘s recent Go RVing Owner Demographic Profile, 8% of RVers own expandable travel trailers. Young families make up 40% of travel trailer owners, 52% are millennials and Gen Zers, while 30% are first-time owners.
Expandable travel trailers are utilized during 53% of owners’ vacation time. They are used the most often in the summer (83%), then the fall (45%), followed by spring (40%), and winter (26%).
According to the RVIA, 58% of expandable travel trailer owners prefer staying at state parks or recreation area campgrounds, while 48% prefer campgrounds in national parks and 51% prefer private campgrounds.
Alongside RVing, 52% of expandable travel trailer owners participate in outdoor sports, 49% of them fish, and 45% enjoy water-based recreational activities. The top three reasons that they choose to travel and go RVing are time in the outdoors (11%), just unwinding and relaxing (20%), and saving money on travel costs or adding additional adventure and excitement into their lives (8%).
Other outdoor activities that they bring along are bicycles (39%) and kayaks (20%).
As per RVIA’s recent study, 58% of expandable travel trailer owners are between the ages of 18 to 54, and 42% are aged 55 or older. Fifty-five percent (55%) of expandable travel trailer owners are female, while 45% are male.
When looking at employment, 22% of the owners are retired, and 48% are full-time employees. The average annual income for 53% of expandable travel trailer owners is more than $65,000, and 40% live with children at home.

The study has identified seven distinct clusters of people based on RV owners’ habits, needs, and unique motivations. The study also provides a breakdown of various kinds of recreational vehicles as well as an analysis of the demographics that favor different types of RVs.
