Paces Mill at Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area Closes for Rehabilitation Efforts

The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CRNRA) has closed a portion of Paces Mill, its last river take-out point.

The closure includes the parking lot north of Highway 41, the main boat ramp, and restroom facilities. Although the northbound entrance from Highway 41 will be inaccessible, trails in the Palisades unit will remain open, allowing access from the Bob Callan Trailhead and the Akers Mill parking lot.

“Paces Mill will be closed from October 2 until May 2025 with no access to parking, facilities, or the canoe launch. The last park boat ramp south of US41 will soon re-open with very limited vehicle access for take-out. Plan to exit the river before Paces!” an NPS alert stated.

This closure is necessary for recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene and the New Day Palisades rehabilitation project. According to a press release, Superintendent Ann Honious stated, “With the flooding that occurred at Paces Mill from Hurricane Helene, the entire site needs extensive cleaning to remove approximately three inches of mud.”

Honious also indicated that the restroom would be evaluated for damages and repaired, along with the removal of downed and damaged trees, and the cleaning and relocation of site furnishings.

In partnership with the Cumberland Community Improvement District, the New Day Palisades project represents a $15.8 million investment focused on improving visitor safety and circulation in the area.

The initial phase of the New Day Palisades project aims to make significant upgrades, including a new parking lot, improved trails, and additional restroom facilities. The project also includes creating a meadow and bioswales to promote sustainability along the Chattahoochee River. Construction is set to begin in mid-October.

“We encourage all visitors to prepare for restricted river access, plan ahead, and explore other areas of the park during this construction project. There are 15 land units that provide parking, access to the river, and over 65 miles of hiking trails,” the press release indicated.
