Florida Residents Gain Priority in State Park Reservations with New Bill

Following the signing of HB 109 by Gov. Ron DeSantis, Florida residents will now have priority when reserving time in state parks.

As per a report, the legislation came in response to complaints that third parties were occupying reservations after the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) made them available. The bill passed both chambers of the Legislature unanimously.

Previously, the system allowed reservations to be made 11 months in advance for all individuals. However, the new legislation directs DEP’s Division of Recreation and Parks to open reservations exclusively for Florida residents 11 months in advance, with non-residents only being allowed to reserve ten months ahead.

“As a proud member of the RV Caucus, and somebody who lives in an RV during Session, I want to thank Sen. (Ed) Hooper for opening up more opportunities for Florida residents to be able to enjoy our incredible, award-winning state parks,” said Zephyrhills Republican Sen. Danny Burgess.

Reservation benefits will extend to state park cabins, campsites, and RV, tent, boat, and equestrian sites.

To book a campsite more than ten months in advance, individuals must provide a valid Florida driver’s license or identification number from a Florida identification card.

Lakeland Republican Rep. Jennifer Canady carried the bill in the House, citing a “problem with access” in the House Agriculture, Conservation, and Resiliency Subcommittee discussion.

Marc Dunbar, a lawyer with Dean Mead representing the Florida Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds and the Florida Recreational Vehicle Trade Association, welcomed the bill’s passage. He mentioned that this is one of many legislative efforts to improve the outlook for state campgrounds.

The outdoor recreation industry significantly contributes to Florida’s economy, with state parks as a major attraction for tourists and locals alike. In the 2021-22 fiscal year, approximately 32 million people visited Florida’s state parks, spanning over 800,000 acres and 100 miles of coastline.

This new legislation benefits Florida residents and has broader implications for the outdoor recreation industry. By streamlining the reservation process and prioritizing locals, the bill encourages Floridians to enjoy the state’s natural resources and supports the industry’s growth. As outdoor recreation becomes increasingly popular, this bill helps ensure Florida residents have ample opportunities to enjoy their beautiful parks.

“It’s time that Florida residents who paid for these parks enjoy the 175 award-winning state parks we have in our beautiful state,” said Sen. Hooper.

The prioritization of Florida residents in state park reservations is a significant step in supporting the state’s outdoor recreation industry and providing residents with better access to the natural resources that contribute to Florida’s unique appeal.
