Timber Creek Campground Amphitheater Reopens After Safety and Accessibility Repairs

Timber Creek Campground Amphitheater on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park (Colorado) has reopened for ranger-led programming after undergoing significant repairs this year.

The project, made possible through a $25,000 gift from Rocky Mountain Conservancy, was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Aug. 14.

The restoration allows for the return of evening ranger programs, a longtime tradition in the park that had been suspended since 2020. The programs resumed this summer, offering visitors free opportunities to learn about wildlife, ecology, and the park’s history.

Before the pandemic and the East Troublesome Fire, the amphitheater regularly hosted interpretive programs each summer.

Without regular use, the amphitheater fell into disrepair. The situation added to Rocky Mountain National Park’s existing $233 million maintenance backlog.

The improvements addressed multiple safety and accessibility concerns. Crews replaced lighting, outlets, and 130 feet of deteriorated walkway handrails. Repairs were also made to the retaining wall, stage rockwork, and capstone mortar.

“From their inception in national park campgrounds, these ranger-led programs are at the heart of the National Park Service’s mission,” RMNP Superintendent Gary Ingram said, as reported by Estes Park News on September 3.

“Due to Rocky Mountain Conservancy’s support and the work of dedicated and talented park staff, we were able to complete this project at a faster pace than if we were to go at it alone,” Ingram added.

Additional work included repairing rotted purlins, repainting accessible parking spaces and seating areas, installing a steel fire ring, and addressing rodent damage in nearby support buildings. The project was carried out by RMNP Facilities and Interpretation teams.

The upgrades ensure that the amphitheater is safe and functional for visitors.

In 2026, the park plans to add new audiovisual equipment to further support programming.

Chris Berry, agent for Simcha Rudolph’s Charitable Fund, whose donation enabled the work, said the project reflected the donor’s vision.

“Education is so important and is such a key part of the National Park Service mission, and Simcha would be proud to support such a project where families and individuals can come together to learn more about Rocky Mountain National Park,” Berry said.
