Moraine Park Campground to Reopen After Two-Year Renovation

Rocky Mountain National Park’s Moraine Park Campground in Colorado will reopen for summer reservations this week following a two-year closure for extensive infrastructure upgrades. Reservations will be available starting at 8 a.m. Tuesday through recreation.gov, with camping beginning Wednesday and running through July 22.

Located near the Beaver Meadows entrance outside Estes Park, Moraine Park is one of Colorado’s most visited campgrounds.

It offers approximately 240 campsites for tents and RVs and is known for its views of Longs Peak and proximity to popular trailheads.

According to an article published by Colorado Sun, the campground closed in 2023 for a comprehensive renovation project aimed at modernizing aging infrastructure.

Work included replacing water and sewage lines, updating electrical hookups, and relocating some campsites to mitigate flooding risks.

Additional improvements were made to enhance accessibility for individuals with disabilities.

The project, initially expected to be completed within a year, encountered multiple delays and was extended through fall 2024. However, final work concluded earlier than expected this spring, allowing for a limited reopening.

The renovations are part of Rocky Mountain National Park’s broader efforts to improve visitor facilities and protect natural resources.

According to the park’s Facebook post, the Moraine Park Campground and Utility Rehabilitation Project is a major infrastructure effort designed to upgrade water, wastewater, and electrical systems that support not only the campground but also the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center, the park headquarters, and several other essential facilities within Rocky Mountain National Park.

Reservations will be capped during the initial rollout to monitor performance of the upgraded utilities under moderate usage.

“Before additional dates are released, out of an abundance of caution, park staff and contractors will be testing the new water and wastewater systems to ensure they are working properly to keep up with expected demand,” the announcement adds.
