Lost Lake Campground in Colorado’s Gunnison National Forest has been named the best place to camp in the Mountain Region by The Dyrt, a popular camping platform that released its annual “Best Places to Camp Regional Awards” earlier this month.
The campground, located near Paonia, earned the top spot among 10 sites selected across the region.
The Mountain Region category includes campsites in Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, Montana, Wyoming, and New Mexico.
The Dyrt’s rankings are based on camper reviews and site data, with selections recognizing standout campgrounds for amenities, accessibility, and visitor experience.
Lost Lake Campground offers 18 lakeside campsites, accommodating tent, RV, and equestrian users.
According to an article published by Outdoor Colorado, all sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The seasonal campground operates from mid-June through September due to its high elevation and remote location. Nightly fees are $24.
“Lost Lake Campground is a great place for families to camp. Kids and parents alike will enjoy fishing and hiking around Lost Lake, Dollar Lake and Lost Lake Slough. Beckwith Pass provides breathtaking vistas of the Ruby Mountain Range,” the campground indicates on its website.
Another Colorado destination, White Star Campground, placed third on the same list.
Situated in the Pike-San Isabel National Forest near Twin Lakes, the campground features 67 campsites across three loops and offers access to extensive hiking opportunities.
Sites are priced at $30 per night. The campground’s larger capacity and proximity to popular
“White Star Campground is in ponderosa pine and sage habitat at 9,300 feet on the northern shore of Twin Lakes Reservoir. Facilities include picnic tables with lantern poles, fire rings with grates and vault toilets,” the campground states.
Each selected site offers distinct experiences, from backcountry adventures to full-service amenities, representing a broad range of camper preferences across the Mountain Region. The Dyrt’s rankings provide a resource for travelers planning outdoor trips during the busy summer season.
