Colorado State Parks Introduces Free Sunscreen Stations

Colorado State Parks is taking a proactive approach to sun safety with the introduction of free sunscreen stations at seven locations across the state. This program aims at promoting responsible recreation and reducing skin cancer risk.

This is a collaborative effort between Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), UCHealth, and IMPACT Melanoma. Visitors to Chatfield, Roxborough, Golden Gate Canyon, Eleven Mile, Spinney, Ridgway, State Forest, and Castlewood Canyon State Parks can now access complimentary sunscreen to protect themselves from UV rays during their outdoor adventures.

This initiative mirrors programs in other states, such as Rhode Island’s comprehensive sun safety initiative in its parks and recreation settings, which included providing free sunscreen, increasing shade, and developing targeted strategies for different recreational environments.

Karryn Christiansen, a representative of the Colorado Comprehensive Cancer Control Program with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, emphasized the importance of encouraging healthy behaviors to reduce cancer risk.

“With Colorado’s altitude and plentiful sunshine, it is critical to proactively take steps to protect yourself from the sun’s harmful rays,” Christiansen said.

To mitigate these risks, health experts recommend a multi-faceted approach to sun safety. This includes wearing sun-protective clothing, using broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen, and avoiding sun exposure during peak hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Scott Roush, Colorado Parks and Wildlife deputy regional manager, expressed enthusiasm about introducing a new feature at the parks to promote healthy sun habits among visitors.

“Coloradans live life outside, and these stations are a simple way people can balance their outdoor recreation fun with protecting their skin from the sun,” Roush said.

The initiative also aligns with the concept of responsible recreation, which encourages outdoor enthusiasts to “know before you go” by checking weather forecasts and park conditions.
