Wishon Village RV Park (California) has become an essential hub for firefighters working to contain the Garnet Fire in the Sierra National Forest.
Normally a popular mountain retreat for campers, the park now serves as a base for emergency crews responding to the wildfire.
The campground, located northeast of the fire in evacuation zone K-27, is closed to the public under mandatory evacuation orders.
Owner Kris Oneida offered the property as a resource for fire crews once the evacuation was announced.
“As soon as that happened, we kind of switched gears,” Oneida said, as reported by FOX 26 News on September 5.
“From being a recreational destination to more like essential workers. I called almost immediately and offered the campground because I know we have a lot to offer somewhere to sleep, a hot shower, food and drink, even internet so they can call home to their families,” Oneida added.
The shift has given firefighters a reliable place to rest between shifts. The campground provides power, water, showers, and a small store stocked with snacks and drinks to meet daily needs.
With space available for fire trucks, RVs, and tents, the property offers flexibility for crews. The amenities have become an important resource during long hours in challenging conditions.
“They’re just so thankful, they’re positive,” Oneida said. “They love that there’s a store in the middle of nowhere and somewhere that they can have a shower while they’re working. Nothing but positive things to say.”
According to its website, Wishon Village Campground has been family-owned and operated since 1960, offering visitors a simple mountain escape in the Sierra Nevadas.
Guests can enjoy fresh air, starry skies, and a slower pace of life. While Wi-Fi is available, the absence of cell service helps campers truly disconnect. The campground prides itself on being clean, welcoming, and peaceful, with a small gift shop.
Located 75 miles from Fresno at 6,600 feet above sea level, Wishon Village RV Park is just a mile from Wishon Reservoir and seven miles from Courtright Reservoir.
The summer resort features 96 full hook-up RV sites, a cabin rental, and two well-appointed RV rental units, along with tent camping areas.
