Sheep Creek Campground to Reopen After Flood Closures in Kings Canyon National Park

Sheep Creek Campground in Kings Canyon National Park (California) is set to welcome guests again after closures caused by severe flooding in 2022 and 2023. The return of limited access will mark a step in the broader recovery of campgrounds across Cedar Grove.

The campground is scheduled to open on Wednesday (August 20), according to the National Park Service (NPS).

Reservations became available on Tuesday (August 19) morning through Recreation.gov. The site will remain open only until Sept. 17, when it will close again for the season.

Sheep Creek Campground, a popular summer destination, typically operates from May through September. Flood damage to infrastructure and roads has kept the site closed since 2022.

According to an article published by Your Central Valley on August 18, the 2022 and 2023 floods caused damage to roadways and facilities, leaving Cedar Grove inaccessible for more than a year. The repairs were necessary to restore safe public access.

In addition to Sheep Creek, other campgrounds in the Cedar Grove area remain closed. Work is still underway at Canyon View and Moraine Campgrounds, both of which were affected by the flooding.

Sheep Creek Campground is located along Highway 180, just a quarter mile from Cedar Grove Village in Kings Canyon National Park.

Set on the canyon floor near the confluence of the South Fork of the Kings River and Sheep Creek, the campground provides convenient access to nearby services in Cedar Grove Village. While the campground is paved, there are currently no designated accessible sites, though the park has plans to improve accessibility in the future.

For RV and trailer users, Sheep Creek offers sites averaging 20 to 30 feet, with a few large sites available that can accommodate vehicles up to 90 feet. Visitors should confirm site sizes and availability through Recreation.gov before booking, as the campground cannot accommodate changes upon arrival.

The campground does not provide hookups or dump stations; the nearest dump station is at Princess Campground in Sequoia National Forest, available during the summer.

Moraine Campground, located three-quarters of a mile from Cedar Grove Village, also sits along the South Fork of the Kings River beneath evergreen stands at 4,600 feet.

Open seasonally from May through October, the campground requires reservations, which can be made up to one month in advance. Services, including food and showers, are available in Cedar Grove Village.

Moraine features several designated accessible sites—71A, 74, 103, 105, and 108—each equipped with paved parking, a level tent pad, an accessible picnic table, and a raised grill.

Wheelchair users will find the campground paved and relatively level, with accessible routes leading to facilities, including restrooms. Like Sheep Creek, Moraine has no hookups or dump stations, with the nearest summer dump station located at Princess Campground along Highway 180.
