Mojave National Preserve to Implement Updated Fees for Campgrounds in 2025

The Mojave National Preserve announced plans to increase fees for its developed campgrounds and transition to a reservation system through Recreation.gov starting January 1, 2025.

Visitors will be required to book campsites online or via the Recreation.gov reservation line at 877-444-6777. Campsites will be available for reservation up to six months in advance on a rolling basis, with same-day reservations also permitted.

These updates will affect three campgrounds within the preserve: Hole-in-the-Wall Campground will charge $25 per night, Mid Hills Campground $20 per night, and Black Canyon Group and Equestrian Campground $50 per night. The fee adjustments follow a review process by the National Park Service (NPS) that involves extensive public engagement. The new rates were benchmarked against similar facilities in the region to ensure parity and value for visitors.

According to a press release, the additional revenue generated from the fee increase will directly support operational costs and deferred maintenance projects. Specific improvements include addressing accessibility deficiencies at Hole-in-the-Wall Information Center and Campground, replacing deteriorated picnic tables at the same campground, and upgrading vault toilets across all campgrounds. These enhancements aim to improve the overall visitor experience while maintaining the park’s infrastructure.

The Hole-in-the-Wall Campground, one of the most popular sites within the preserve, offers unique rock formations and scenic vistas, making it a sought-after destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Facilities include essential amenities such as pit toilets, trash receptacles, fire rings, and picnic tables, but do not offer utility hookups. Visitors are reminded that firewood is not available within the park.

Mid Hills Campground, known for its secluded and serene environment, features basic facilities, including pit toilets, trash receptacles, fire rings, and picnic tables, but lacks dump stations or utility hookups. The Black Canyon Group and Equestrian Campground also provides specialized facilities tailored to group and equestrian visitors. The group campsite features a shaded shelter with picnic tables, a fire ring, a grill, a water spigot, vault toilets, and trash receptacles. Meanwhile, the equestrian campsite includes corrals along with similar amenities such as a fire ring, grill, water spigot, vault toilets, and trash receptacles, ensuring convenience for campers and their horses.
