The campground at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park in California will be closed through April 2026 due to continued delays in accessibility-related construction
“The 2025 Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park campground reopening will be delayed until August 1, 2025, due to unforeseen delays to an ongoing infrastructure improvement project bringing new, accessible restrooms and a campfire center to the campground,” the campground announced.
Originally scheduled to reopen April 1, the date was first pushed back to August due to winter weather and supply chain disruptions.
The latest delay adds another year to the closure timeline, impacting campers who had planned visits during the 2025 season.
The 107-site campground, located off Graham Hill Road in Santa Cruz County, has been shut down since November 2023 to undergo renovations aimed at bringing the facility into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The upgrades include bathroom retrofits, new signage, and the installation of an accessible drinking fountain.
“Our initial reopening date was a provided timeline from the contractor,” Scott Sipes, head of operations for California State Parks’ Santa Cruz division, said, as reported by Lookout Santa Cruz on June 11.
The extended closure will require the cancellation of more than 5,200 reservations.
Park officials said all affected guests will receive full refunds and are encouraged to check the park’s website for updates.
“We recognize how important your vacation plans are, and we deeply apologize for any inconvenience this delay has caused. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to complete the upgrades and improve the experience for future visits,” the campground’s announcement indicates.
According to its website, Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, located in the Santa Cruz Mountains, is known for its 40-acre grove of towering old-growth redwood trees, drawing visitors from around the world for its historical significance and natural beauty.
Spanning more than 4,650 acres of forested and open land, the park offers a range of recreational activities, including hiking, horseback riding, picnicking, swimming, and camping.
