Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park has announced the closure of its campground, visitor center and day-use area through June 25, due to a full road closure on Highway 36 caused by an “active landslide.”
The closure affects an area located half a mile west of the campground entrance, according to a statement from California State Parks. Officials said the decision was made to ensure public safety while the situation is assessed and repairs are planned
According to an article published by Lost Coast Outpost, campground reservations made through ReserveCalifornia will be automatically canceled and refunded.
“There is no alternative route from the west to the park along highway 36. At this time there is no estimate for when the road will re-open. Travelers should check the CalTrans quick map for the most up to date information,” the park announced.
Cheatham Grove, another popular spot within the region, remains open as it is located west of the landslide and not impacted by the Highway 36 closure.
Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park continues to offer a quiet destination for visitors seeking a less-crowded redwood experience.
In summer, children ride bikes along the paved loop that winds through the 28-site campground, with some sites overlooking the Van Duzen River.
Inside the visitor center, taxidermy and skeleton displays allow visitors to safely learn about local wildlife, including bears, mountain lions, moles, and steelhead trout.
Weekend campfire programs remain one of the park’s cherished traditions, bringing campers together under the canopy of redwoods.
Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park also offers a variety of day-use activities and facilities for visitors of all ages, including shaded picnic areas, an environmental learning and visitor center with interpretive exhibits and programs, and opportunities for fishing and swimming in the Van Duzen River.
