Kampgrounds of America (KOA) has welcomed the Mena/Ouachita National Forest KOA Journey in Mena, Arkansas.
The campground, owned by Christi Austin and Benjamin Appleton, has officially joined the KOA family after operating independently in recent years.
The property, originally built as a KOA in 1977, sits under mature shade trees in the Ouachita Mountains and offers direct access to the Wolf Pen Gap trail system. The return to KOA branding reflects the owners’ commitment to delivering consistent guest experiences under a nationally recognized name.
“As avid campers, we knew from the start that we’d either buy a KOA or convert to one,” said Austin. “KOA is a trusted, nationally recognized brand with a loyal following. Partnering with KOA was an easy decision thanks to the incredible support from the home office and the strength of the brand.”
The Mena/Ouachita National Forest KOA Journey is designed to serve both overnight travelers and longer-stay guests. It features 88 total sites, including 73 RV sites, seven cabins, and five tent sites.
The tiered layout offers privacy and scenic views, while a stocked fishing lake and pool add to the recreational options.
Campers also have access to ATV-friendly trails, with UTV rentals delivered directly to the property.
Other amenities include high-speed fiber Wi-Fi, gated entry, storm shelters, a modern bathhouse, an on-site store, a dog park, laundry facilities, and both nightly and monthly rates.
Austin noted that the campground’s location and amenities are intended to attract tourism that benefits the wider community. “The property’s unique layout sets it apart, and our goal is to continue attracting tourism to the Mena area in a way that supports local businesses and celebrates this incredible region,” she said.
The move comes as KOA reports continued economic benefits from camping nationwide. According to the company’s 2024 Camping and Outdoor Hospitality Report, campers contributed $61 billion to local economies, spending an average of $200 daily while traveling. Interest in small-town and food tourism was cited by 27of surveyed campers.
KOA Journey properties, such as the Mena location, are positioned along major travel routes and focus on convenience for road-weary guests. Standard features include long pull-thru RV sites, after-hours check-in, and stocked RV supply stores.
Austin’s team emphasizes maintaining the campground’s connection to the natural surroundings while offering modern amenities.
“We’re proud to offer a campground that feels truly connected to nature,” Austin said. “We’re excited to see how the KOA brand can help our small company grow, and we look forward to helping families create lasting memories for years to come.”
The Mena/Ouachita National Forest KOA Journey joins more than 500 KOA locations in the U.S. and Canada.
The campground, located at 3708 Highway 71 S in Mena, operates year-round. Reservations can be made through the KOA website, by phone at 479-394-6099, or via the KOA App.
