Russian River Campground Closes Wednesday for Extensive Road Construction Project

The Russian River Campground, a cherished destination for both locals and tourists in Alaska, is scheduled to close its gates to vehicle and pedestrian traffic starting this Wednesday.

According to a release from the Forest Service, this closure is a necessary step to facilitate a significant construction project on the Russian River Campground Road.

The construction project, which will involve extensive use of heavy machinery, is set to reconstruct one mile of the road.

The plan includes the creation of new retaining walls both above and below the road, expansion of the shoulder, and installation of a new surface and railing. These improvements aim to enhance access for users and protect the nearby critical salmon habitat from hillside erosion.

While the road is set to be reopened on May 29, 2024, officials have noted that this could happen sooner if progress allows. This timeline is a crucial detail for those planning their summer excursions, as the Russian River Campground is a popular spot during the warmer months.

During the closure, outdoor enthusiasts are not entirely out of options. The Russian River and Angler’s Trail can still be accessed via the Russian River Ferry at Sportsman’s Landing through September 4, offering an alternative for those looking to enjoy the area’s natural beauty.

In addition to the Angler’s Trail, Aspen Flats and Upper Russian Lake Cabins will remain open for reservations. However, they will need to be accessed via the trailhead at Snug Harbor Road, rather than the Lower Russian Lakes trailhead, during the campground’s closure.

It is important to note that Barber Cabin will be closed until the campground reopens, limiting some of the lodging options that visitors may have been considering for their trips.

The closure of the Russian River Campground is not just a matter of construction. It is closely tied to environmental conservation efforts, particularly aimed at protecting the salmon habitat that is critical to the region.

According to its website, the campground features 83 sites, paved roads and spurs, and no hookups.

The closure of the Russian River Campground is a significant event for the local community and tourists alike.

While the closure is a temporary inconvenience, it is a step towards ensuring that the Russian River Campground remains a safe, accessible, and environmentally sustainable place for all visitors in the years to come.
