Lake Lurleen State Park Renovation to Bring New Cabins, Campground Enhancements

Lake Lurleen State Park, located nine miles northwest of Tuscaloosa and Northport in Coker, Alabama, is set to undergo a major transformation as part of a renovation project.

The 1,625-acre park will see significant improvements funded by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR). The funding for these renovations comes from a $150 million initiative by the ADCNR, sourced from user fees and federal appropriations.

State Parks Director Greg Lein outlined the plans for Lake Lurleen: “We will redo all the campground sites and probably put a barndominium there,” he said, as reported by WVUA23 news on August 14.

“We’re also building cabins. That park has never had any cabins. They will be tiny house cabins, like at Meaher State Park. That will be a big improvement for the park. That bidding will happen in the next couple of months, and the renovations should be complete in the fall of 2025,” he said.

The introduction of tiny house cabins follows a similar model implemented at Meaher State Park. These cabins are designed to offer a blend of comfort and rustic charm, providing visitors with a new way to experience the natural beauty of Lake Lurleen.

In addition to the new accommodations, the renovation project includes upgrades to the park’s infrastructure. Visitors can expect enhancements to water, sewer, and electrical systems, as well as the introduction of wifi services.

Alabama State Parks has also implemented a new online reservation system for all its parks. This system allows Alabama residents to make reservations up to 13 months in advance, giving them an advantage over out-of-state visitors.

Lein commented on this new feature, saying, “This will give Alabamians an advantage for booking and also gives them some advantages in pricing. We’re really excited to be able to provide that new opportunity to the citizens of our state.”
