THOR Industries and Harbinger have been named winners of Fast Company’s 2025 World Changing Ideas Awards for their joint development of the world’s first hybrid electric Class A motorhome.

The award recognizes pioneering efforts that address global challenges through impactful innovation across sustainability, technology, and design.

The hybrid RV, built through a collaboration between THOR Industries and Harbinger, integrates Harbinger’s electric chassis with a low-emissions gasoline range extender capable of recharging the battery system.

Designed specifically for RV use, the vehicle delivers up to 500 miles of range, including 150 miles on electric power alone.

With flexible charging options, ranging from grid integration to solar and off-grid capabilities, the hybrid RV was engineered to support extended travel and a simplified driving experience.

The companies aim to advance sustainable RVing by combining performance, usability, and environmentally responsible engineering.

“We’re honored that THOR Industries and Harbinger have received Fast Company’s 2025 World Changing Ideas Award for the world’s first hybrid Class A motorhome,” Todd Woelfer, chief operating officer at THOR Industries, said in a press release.

“This achievement underscores the collective commitment and partnership between THOR and Harbinger that is dedicated to pioneering an electrified RV ecosystem,” Woelfer added.

According to Woelfer, the project represents a strategic investment in innovation that supports THOR’s long-term competitive advantage.

The initiative also reinforces the company’s focus on evolving consumer needs and enhancing comfort in recreational travel.

The 2025 World Changing Ideas Awards recognized 100 projects across 12 categories, selected from more than 1,500 submissions. Entries were judged by Fast Company editors and reporters based on impact, design, scalability, sustainability, and societal benefit.

“This recognition validates the work we’re doing with THOR to help lead the RV industry forward,” said John Harris,  co-founder and CEO of Harbinger.

“By building a plug-in hybrid specifically for RVs, we are giving customers peace of mind for long-distance travel while also enabling fully electric operation whenever possible,” Harris added.

Harris emphasized the alignment between both companies in their vision for cleaner, more efficient transportation.

The result, he noted, is a product that demonstrates how advanced vehicle technology can meet the practical demands of RV owners.

Fast Company editor-in-chief Brendan Vaughan said the awards program aims to spotlight solutions that make measurable contributions to pressing global issues.

“The World Changing Ideas Awards have always been about showcasing the art of the possible,” Vaughan said. “We’re proud to recognize the organizations and leaders that are making meaningful progress on the biggest issues of our time.”
