Summer Bookings Open at One of the UK’s Largest Campsites

Shell Island in North Wales, often cited as one of the largest campsites in the UK, is preparing for another busy summer season as families look for affordable holiday options.

Located within Snowdonia National Park along North Cardigan Bay, the 450-acre site, with 300 acres dedicated solely to camping, offers 800 pitches and attracts thousands of visitors annually.

The site’s flexible camping setup, where guests are not assigned specific pitches, allows holidaymakers to choose from a variety of settings, including beachfront spots, wooded areas, or locations near central amenities.

During peak summer months in July and August, pricing remains relatively low, with adult rates at £13 per night and children aged three to fifteen staying for £6.50. However, minimum stay requirements of two or three nights may apply over bank holiday weekends.

Shell Island offers more than traditional camping, providing beach chalets and flats that accommodate up to six people. Motorhomes and campervans are welcome, though caravans are not permitted, according to Liverpool Echo

The site is located approximately a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Liverpool, with the nearest train station in Llanbedr, about a 30-minute walk away.

Facilities are designed with families in mind, including a central leisure complex, a Children’s Play Park, a Games Room, and a restaurant and snack bar.

The Tavern Bar sits adjacent to the playground, enabling parents to relax while keeping an eye on children.

Restrooms feature family units, baby baths, changing facilities, and accessible showers. Free-to-use hairdryers and a dedicated make-up and hair area are also available in the women’s facilities.

Dogs are allowed on the site, although restrictions are in place in certain areas like the snack bar and bar.

The site draws praise for its scenic appeal and family-friendly features. “I haven’t been in many years, thoroughly enjoyed the stay, everything you need on site,” one guest noted on Facebook.

Another added, “When the weather’s good, this place is unreal, you could be abroad with Snowdonia overlooking the sea.

Always a favourite to return to.” A reviewer on TripAdvisor described Shell Island as a “camping paradise,” citing its “fantastic location, great staff and value for money,” and highlighting its beachside setting and potential dolphin sightings.

Professionals in the outdoor hospitality sector may find Shell Island’s model noteworthy for its combination of large-scale unassigned camping, supplementary accommodation options, and centralized amenities.

These features, coupled with consistent pricing and family-oriented infrastructure, may serve as a case study for operators looking to increase guest satisfaction and attract repeat visitors.

Shell Island is especially known for its namesake shells, with over 200 varieties washing ashore between January and June—an added draw for nature enthusiasts and families alike.
