Estuaries Day Returns to York River State Park

York River State Park will host Estuaries Day on Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. The park is known for its rare and delicate estuarine environment and guests are invited to celebrate this unique place.

York River is a one-of-a-kind location because it is where freshwater and saltwater meet, and this creates a rich habitat for marine and plant life. It is on the York River and is designated as a Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve.

“We are excited to bring this event back and showcase all the beauty that York River has to offer,” said York River State Park Manager Charlie Whalen.

“We have partnered with the Virginia Institute of Marine Science to share our passion for public lands with the park guests,” Whalen added.

The event includes exhibits from various agencies and organizations highlighting the park’s unique ecosystem.

Staff and volunteers will lead hiking and paddling excursions. Self-guided adventurers are also welcome to discover the beauty in the brackish water world.

“We offer programs and activities that focus on the wildlife and preservation of the York River and its marshes,” said John Gresham York River State Park education specialist. “This event is a great way to connect the community with their local park while experiencing the importance of estuaries on the environment and human health.”
