The Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) will host a free, family-friendly Nature Play Camping Trip on May 23–24 at Ponderosa Campground in White Rock.
Aimed at first-time campers and families looking to build outdoor skills, the overnight event offers hands-on learning in a relaxed setting.
The camping trip begins at 4 p.m. on Friday and runs through Saturday morning.
Registration is required, and children must be accompanied by an adult. Participation is free, and overnight camping is optional.
The event is part of PEEC’s effort to encourage family engagement in nature-based activities and lower the barrier to entry for outdoor recreation.
“This camping trip is all about fun, connection, and low-pressure learning,” Izza Bello, outdoor educator and leader of the event, said, as reported by Los Alamos Reporter on May 18. Bello is known for facilitating PEEC’s popular Monday Nature Playtime programs and brings experience in guiding families through outdoor exploration.
During the event, families will learn camping basics such as choosing a campsite, setting up tents, and keeping children entertained outside.
The event will include a shared dinner, campfire gathering, and s’mores provided by PEEC. Light morning activities and an optional group hike will wrap up the event by 10 a.m. Saturday.
PEEC has a limited inventory of backpacks, tents, and sleeping bags available to borrow. Registered participants will receive a gear checklist and preparation tips one week before the trip
