A new report from Newbook, a property management software provider for RV parks and campgrounds, outlines significant changes in traveler behavior and expectations shaping the outdoor hospitality industry.

Released on July 16, the RV & Camping Consumer Insights Report 2025 draws on survey data from over 1,000 U.S. outdoor travelers, revealing that digitally driven guests are redefining how they book, stay, and interact with campgrounds.

The report highlights that 64% of travelers now book trips online, with Millennials and Gen Z accounting for the majority.

However, only 36% book directly with campground operators, suggesting an opportunity for properties to improve margins and guest relationships through better direct-booking strategies.

“Today’s campers expect a seamless experience from start to finish,” Shaun Cornelius, general manager of Newbook, said in a press release.

“They want the freedom of the outdoors with the ease and speed of modern tech—and they’re rewarding the campgrounds that deliver both,” Cornelius added.

Wi-Fi access remains a critical amenity, with 78% of guests expecting high-speed internet. While remote work is not the primary use, younger travelers rely on connectivity for entertainment and social sharing, and many are open to extended stays if remote work options are supported.

Tent camping is seeing renewed interest, particularly among Gen Z and Millennials. According to the report, 39% of these groups booked a tent camping experience in the past year—nearly four times the rate of Baby Boomers—reflecting a desire to unplug without fully disconnecting.

Cleanliness emerged as the top priority for travelers, with 71% ranking clean bathrooms above all other amenities, including Wi-Fi.

For 62% of respondents, cleanliness was the primary reason for returning to a property, highlighting its impact on guest loyalty.

Pet-friendly accommodations continue to gain traction, with nearly one in five travelers bringing pets on recent trips. Millennials and Gen Z are significantly more likely than older generations to prioritize pet-inclusive features when selecting a destination.

The trend toward shorter stays is also shaping campground operations. Forty-four percent of respondents said their longest recent trip lasted only one to two nights. This suggests that operators need to manage high turnover efficiently while also encouraging longer visits, especially among younger guests who are more likely to extend their stays.

“We’re seeing more variety than ever before in how people travel,” said Cornelius. “Operators need to support solo Gen Z travelers, families with kids and pets, and weekend warriors—all at the same time. Flexibility and clarity are critical.”
