KOA Expands in South Dakota With Addition of Hill City/Needles Highway KOA Holiday

Kampgrounds of America (KOA) has added the Hill City/Needles Highway KOA Holiday to its portfolio of open-to-the-public campgrounds.

The campground, located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, is operated by longtime KOA franchisee Walt Hodgson, who also owns the nearby Custer/Crazy Horse/Black Hills KOA Holiday.

With nearly 20 years of experience in the KOA system, Hodgson and his team have a strong operational background and familiarity with the region’s outdoor tourism economy.

“We have always loved the Black Hills, and this location’s central access to Sylvan Lake, Needles Highway, and Custer State Park makes it a true gem,” Hodgson said in a press release.

The Hill City/Needles Highway KOA Holiday is located just minutes from Mount Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Memorial, and the historic town of Hill City. The site offers access to national parks and other outdoor attractions, making it an appealing destination for travelers exploring South Dakota’s rugged terrain.

The economic value of campgrounds continues to grow, with KOA’s 2024 Camping and Outdoor Hospitality Report showing campers spent $61 billion in local economies. According to the report, the average camper spends $200 per day, and 27% express interest in visiting small towns or engaging in food tourism.

At the Hill City/Needles Highway KOA Holiday, guests can access a wide range of family-friendly amenities, including a swimming pool, jump pad, playground, basketball courts, and hayrides.

The property also features a camp store, on-site u-pick produce experience, and free-roaming peacocks.

Planned upgrades under Hodgson’s ownership include a new pool and water area, additional Deluxe Cabins, enhanced playgrounds, a ropes course, and on-site dining options such as a restaurant and café.

The campground will be open for the season from May through October. Hodgson’s team will focus on improving guest experiences and infrastructure in the months ahead.
