A former nudist campground in the Berkshires is being redeveloped into a glamping destination under the Huttopia brand, with operations set to begin on July 6, aligning with the peak summer tourism season in western Massachusetts.
The site, located at 312 Kittle Road and formerly known as Berkshire Vista Resort, has undergone an $8 million redevelopment led by Huttopia North America.
Huttopia, which introduced its glamping model in Europe, focuses on encouraging guests to explore nearby attractions rather than offering extensive on-site entertainment.
The company is currently recruiting 15 employees to support its operations during the high season, according to The Berkshire Eagle.
When the property opens for the 2025 season, it will offer 55 accommodations, consisting of 45 seasonal wood-and-canvas tents and 11 year-round cabins. By 2026, the company aims to expand that number to more than 90 units.
Lodging options will range from minimalist tents with basic amenities to more equipped accommodations featuring private bathrooms, woodstoves, and kitchen facilities. Rates will vary from $95 to $395 per night, depending on the selected unit.
Among the accommodation offerings are the Bonaventure tents, designed for a minimalist experience with a queen bed and shared bathhouses; the Canadienne and Trappeur tents, which accommodate up to five guests and offer enhanced amenities such as minifridges and woodstoves; and the Sierra cabins, a new year-round design for Huttopia featuring fireplaces and fully equipped kitchens.
On-site amenities will include a Café Bistro, a swimming pool with views of the surrounding mountains, communal fire pits, and access to local hiking and mountain biking trails.
According to Amélie Brouhard, Huttopia North America’s chief sales and marketing officer, the company did not face significant development hurdles.
“Huttopia has strong expertise with 25 years of experience developing sites,” Brouhard said in an email. “Rather, we see opportunities to position the brand in a NEW state and within a renowned and sought-after destination.”
Huttopia Berkshires will be the brand’s fourth and final location in the Northeastern United States, following previous openings in New Hampshire (2017), Maine (2019), and the Adirondacks (2021).
The company is collaborating with regional tourism board 1Berkshire to increase its local footprint and attract visitors from key markets such as New York City, Boston, Providence, and Albany.
In a statement, Huttopia founder Céline Bossanne said, “Huttopia Berkshires represents our commitment to creating immersive natural experiences without sacrificing comfort.”
“We’ve designed this location to showcase the remarkable beauty of the Berkshires throughout all four seasons, providing guests with an outdoor experience that blends perfectly into the surrounding culture, whether you’re seeking adventure, respite from the city, or literary inspiration.”
For outdoor hospitality operators, the development highlights continued demand for upscale nature-based accommodations in high-profile regional destinations.
The strategic timing and positioning of Huttopia Berkshires suggest a growing trend toward investing in experiences that combine comfort with outdoor recreation.
The focus on leveraging natural landscapes and local tourism partnerships may offer insights for campground and glamping business owners exploring expansion or rebranding opportunities.
