The Polgooth Inn, a historic countryside pub in Cornwall’s Pentewan Valley, is now available for new tenancy as St Austell Brewery begins its search for a new publican.
The move comes after 15 years of stewardship by Tanya and Alex Williams, who will be stepping away from the business.
Dating back to the 16th century, the Polgooth Inn is located just outside St Austell and has become a popular destination for both locals and tourists.
Its proximity to the Cornish coast, including nearby Pentewan and Porthpean beaches, and its location amid scenic walking trails have contributed to its longstanding appeal.
In addition to its reputation for food, live music, and a welcoming atmosphere, the property also offers glamping accommodation through three on-site pods, catering to the growing demand for unique lodging experiences.
Tanya Williams, reflecting on their time at the Polgooth Inn, stated in a report by Cornish Stuff, “We believed from the start that the Polgooth Inn could sit at the heart of the community – and now the pub definitely does.”
”From village celebrations to local events, we’ve loved being part of this community and are so proud of what’s been built. Running the pub has been incredibly rewarding. We’ve worked closely with St Austell Brewery, who have supported us at every step, and we’re excited to see new publicans bring fresh ideas and passion to this wonderful place.”
The venue includes three separate dining areas with a total capacity of 80 covers. Its original features, low beams, and multiple fireplaces contribute to its historic character.
A spacious beer garden extends the guest experience outdoors and includes covered seating, cycle and horse parking, and landscaped grounds with a stream flowing through the seven-acre property.
The site also includes a commercial kitchen with walk-in chillers and freezers, as well as a three-bedroom flat for the incoming tenant.
Andy Spry, business development manager at St Austell Brewery, emphasized the importance of continuity and innovation in the next phase of the pub’s journey.
“The Polgooth Inn is one of the jewels in our tenanted estate – full of warmth, history, and opportunity. Tanya and Alex have done an incredible job over the last 15 years. We’re now looking for an ambitious and experienced business partner who can take on this thriving business, maintain its exceptional standards, and bring new ideas to help it flourish.”
For outdoor hospitality business owners, this listing offers insight into the growing trend of hybrid hospitality venues that combine food and beverage services with on-site lodging.
Properties like the Polgooth Inn illustrate the market potential of mixed-use sites that attract both day-trippers and overnight guests.
The integration of glamping options can be a valuable revenue stream and broaden a property’s appeal, particularly in tourism-heavy regions.
St Austell Brewery has not disclosed a specific application deadline, but interested parties are encouraged to inquire promptly due to the pub’s established reputation and the opportunity to inherit a turnkey operation in a popular destination.
