Great Basin National Park has completed a major $5.5 million overhaul of its deteriorating water and wastewater systems, thanks to funding from the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA) Legacy Restoration Fund.

According to a press release, Superintendent Ashley Adams emphasized the importance of the project.

“Our most basic mission is to protect the health and safety of park visitors and staff, and that starts with clean, safe water,” Ashley said.

“I’m thankful that the Great American Outdoors Act provided us with the resources we needed to renew our infrastructure and serve the American people,” Ashley added.

The park, which draws more than 150,000 visitors annually, spans from the glacier-carved heights of Wheeler Peak to lowland sagebrush foothills.

Until recently, its water and sewage systems—dating back to the 1960s—frequently failed, affecting services such as restrooms and concession operations, and posing risks to fire response.

Contractors spent the past year replacing more than two miles of water piping and nearly a mile of sewage lines with durable modern materials.

As Great Basin approaches its 40th anniversary as a national park in 2026, these critical upgrades position the park to meet visitor needs and operational demands for years to come.

This investment enhances infrastructure reliability at a key destination, supporting better guest experiences and reinforcing the value of sustained federal investment in natural tourism assets.
