Goa is moving closer to establishing its first caravan park, with a proposed site in Pernem gaining traction following an agreement between the tourism and revenue departments for the transfer of approximately 17,000 square meters of government land in Keri.
According to tourism department officials, the file for the “book transfer” of the land is expected to be presented to the state cabinet in the coming weeks.
“The book transfer of the land was already finalised by the revenue department. It will be put up for the cabinet meeting, and we expect the land transfer to happen soon,” a senior tourism department official said.
The Keri site is intended to accommodate caravans and will include basic infrastructure such as 230V electricity connections, wastewater discharge systems, freshwater inlets, convenience facilities, and designated recreational areas for visitors.
This development is part of a broader initiative by the Goa government to expand into niche tourism sectors, including caravan tourism, aero tourism, marine tourism, and hinterland tourism.
To support this, the government plans to roll out policy incentives aimed at encouraging private investment in alternative tourism models.
One of the key incentives includes reimbursement of the motor vehicle tax for caravans registered in Goa, according to a report by The Times of India.
In addition, the tourism department intends to reimburse up to ₹20 lakh or 25% of the total expenditure for the purchase of recreational vehicles registered in the state.
While promoting caravan tourism, officials also emphasized the need to uphold environmental norms and quality standards to ensure a reliable and appealing experience for travelers.
Access to supporting services will also be a focus in the planning and execution stages.
According to tourism department representatives, the caravan park is expected to benefit the regional economy by creating employment opportunities for the local population in Pernem and by promoting tourism away from the already saturated beach areas.
The project could contribute to more evenly distributed tourism traffic across the state, reducing pressure on conventional tourist destinations.
For business owners in the outdoor hospitality and RV sectors, this initiative signals potential growth opportunities in a relatively untapped market in India.
Entrepreneurs involved in caravan manufacturing, RV rentals, campground development, and auxiliary services may find new avenues for collaboration and expansion as the state builds the required infrastructure and introduces financial incentives to attract investment.
