The Go RVing Owner Demographic Profile is the most comprehensive study of RV ownership ever done, offering deep insights and perspectives into the demographics and ownership habits of RV owners, former RV Owners, as well as RV Intenders, according to the RV Industry Association.
The study has identified seven distinct clusters based on the unique characteristics of RV owners’ motives, needs, and habits. It also gives a breakdown of the different kinds of RVs, as well as an examination of which demographics favor different kinds of RVs.
Folding camper trailers, also called “pop-up campers,” are owned by 6% of RV owners. Young families comprise 24% of pop-up camper owners, and 26% of them are millennials and Gen Zers, while 53% are first-time owners.
These RVs are used 12 days a year on average. They are used most frequently in the summer months (87%), fall (55%), spring (29%), and winter (14%). Meanwhile, 36% of folding camping trailer owners choose to stay at private campgrounds, while 40% prefer national park campgrounds and 63% stay at state parks or recreation area campgrounds.
For recreational activities, these RV owners enjoy outdoor sports (50%), fishing (41%), and water recreation (32%).
The top three reasons they have for RVing include spending time outdoors (22%), just unwinding and relaxing (20%), and exploring a spot with natural beauty (9%). Other outdoor activities they take with them include bicycles (28%) and kayaks (15%).
As for the demographics, 35% are between the ages 18 to 34, and 65% are 55 and over. 51% of people who own pop-up campers are female, while 48% are male.
Concerning employment, 39% of them are retired, while 28% are full-time employees. The annual average income of 48% of folding camper trailer owners is greater than $65,000. 27% have children at home.
