Fodor Family Takes Ownership of Fairbanks/Chena River KOA Journey in North Pole, Alaska

Kampgrounds of America (KOA) has announced Lydia and Joel Fodor as the new owners of the Fairbanks/Chena River KOA Journey in North Pole, Alaska.

The couple, longtime outdoor enthusiasts, assumed ownership, aiming to foster a welcoming environment for travelers and strengthen ties with the local community.

The campground, located just outside Fairbanks, is nestled among birch and spruce trees and is minutes away from regional attractions such as the Santa Claus House and the Trans-Alaska Pipeline viewing area.

Its strategic location and natural beauty made it an ideal opportunity for the Fodors, who were drawn to the area’s outdoor appeal.

“As a family, we’ve always loved spending time outdoors, especially in unique and memorable places,” Lydia said in a press release.

“We were inspired to create a space where other families could enjoy the same kinds of outdoor adventures and traditions that mean so much to us,” Lydia added.

The Fodors’ ownership coincides with growing interest in camping across North America. According to KOA’s 2024 Camping and Outdoor Hospitality Report, campers contributed $61 billion to local economies last year, with average daily spending reaching $200.

Cultural and culinary experiences also continue to drive demand, with 27% of campers expressing interest in visiting small towns and another 27% in food tourism.

KOA Journey campgrounds cater to road-trippers seeking convenience and comfort, offering long pull-thru RV sites and essential amenities. These properties are typically located near highways to provide easy access for travelers on extended routes.

The Fairbanks/Chena River KOA Journey features full-service RV sites, tenting areas, a modern playground, walking trails, and community fire pits.

The property is also pet-friendly and hosts evening activities designed to bring campers together.

Looking ahead, the Fodors plan to expand the campground’s offerings with upgraded tent sites, deluxe cabins, glamping accommodations, a nature center, and multi-use outdoor spaces.

“We’re excited for the campground to become a positive part of the community,” said Joel. “It will attract travelers from all over the world to support local shops, restaurants, and attractions. We’ll be hiring locally, partnering with area businesses, and promoting the culture and hospitality of Fairbanks and North Pole.”

The Fairbanks/Chena River KOA Journey is part of KOA’s network of more than 500 open-to-the-public campgrounds across the U.S. and Canada.

The KOA family includes KOA Holidays and KOA Resorts, each designed with unique features to accommodate a wide range of camper preferences.

The campground, located at 316 Badger Road in North Pole, is open for the 2025 season from May 15 through September 15.
