Widdrington Caravan Park Extension Moves Forward Despite Local Concerns

The Castle Morpeth Local Area Committee approved plans for extension of a caravan park in Widdrington, Northumberland, despite local opposition. The decision allows Park Holidays to add 425 new hard standing pitches.

The first phase of the project, which includes 275 static caravan bases, is already under construction.

Chronicle Live reports that the approval faced objections from Widdrington Parish Council and 33 local residents. The parish council’s primary concerns focused on the security and safety of residents, anticipating an influx of new visitors. Residents also raised issues about increased traffic congestion, potential rises in crime rates, and strain on local services.

Despite these objections, council planners recommended approval of the proposal. Ward councillor Scott Dickinson expressed support for the decision, highlighting that the community had been promised this development for over 20 years.

He noted that the land had changed hands between companies, with various planning applications and ideas proposed, and expressed his satisfaction that a formal plan was now in place from a big company capable of delivering it.

“We want local people to get the jobs and we want the site to integrate into the local community. It’s a great thing for the area, but it would be really good if the company could engage with people. I was also pleased to see the pictures from the site which show phase one having moved forward. They showed a lot of work has been going on that you can’t see from the public highway,” Dickinson added.

The caravan park’s situation underscores the need for consulting with local residents to ensure smoother project approval. Engaging with the community early in the planning process allows developers to address concerns such as traffic congestion, safety, and the strain on local services.

Additionally, highlighting the economic benefits, such as new employment opportunities, can help mitigate opposition by demonstrating the advantages to local residents. By clearly outlining how the project will generate jobs, developers and caravan park owners can showcase a commitment to positively contributing to the community’s economic well-being.
