A recent study by GO Outdoors has identified the most pet-friendly campsites across the UK, with three Welsh destinations ranking in the national top ten. The research reflects a wider trend in travel, as more than one-third of UK families now bring their dogs along on holidays.
GO Outdoors assessed several factors to compile the rankings, including average summer temperatures, the cost of a three-night stay, availability of onsite shops, guest recommendation rates, and the number of nearby outdoor activities within a 10-kilometer radius.
The findings highlight a growing market for pet-friendly holidays, which has become increasingly important as travelers seek alternatives to kennels and pet sitters.
The ability to accommodate guests with dogs has also contributed to the popularity of camping, glamping, and short-term rentals over traditional hotels.
For operators in the outdoor hospitality sector, the report underscores the commercial value of investing in pet-friendly infrastructure and marketing.
According to Nation.Cymru, the highest-ranked Welsh site in the study is Oaklea Camping and Glamping Park in Narberth, Pembrokeshire, which placed fifth overall.
Campsites.co.uk describes Oaklea as a “welcoming, family-friendly rural site just 20 minutes from Pembroke and stunning sandy beaches like Tenby, Saundersfoot, and Barafundle Bay,” offering grass pitches, electric hookups, and shepherd’s huts.
Cae Du Campsite in Beddgelert, Gwynedd, also made the list. The owners note: “Experience the tranquillity of Cae Du, nestled just a stone’s throw away from the charming village of Beddgelert.
Situated along the serene River Glaslyn, our site offers the ideal blend of relaxation and adventure in the heart of Eryri National Park.”
They add that the area offers connections to Welsh folklore, including the legend of Gelert the Hound, and is within walking distance of attractions such as Sygun Copper Mines.
The third Welsh entry is Bryn Gloch in Caernarfon, located at the base of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon).
The site operators state: “Our facilities are perfect for families, with play areas, a football field, and games room to keep the kids entertained. The surrounding area offers adrenaline-fueled adventures, local history, and convenient access to the Rangers Path and Eryri National Park.”
For businesses in the outdoor hospitality industry, the study serves as a reminder of the competitive advantage that comes with offering pet-friendly stays.
With 37% of families traveling with dogs, amenities that welcome pets—such as designated walking areas, waste disposal facilities, or pet-friendly accommodations—can influence booking decisions and drive customer loyalty.
