Survey Shows Growing Preference for Motorhome and Caravan Holidays in 2026

Research indicates a growing number of UK holidaymakers are considering touring-style trips in caravans, motorhomes, and holiday homes in 2026, driven in part by frustrations with air travel.

A survey of 2,000 UK travelers found that 53% are more likely to choose domestic touring holidays rather than flying abroad. Delays, lost luggage, baggage restrictions, and airport queues were cited as key frustrations influencing this shift.

Cost and flexibility were also significant factors. Over half of respondents highlighted value for money as a key reason for choosing domestic touring trips, while many appreciated the ability to travel with pets and retain familiar comforts. According to Out&About Live, the survey also found that freedom of movement and spontaneity remain central to the appeal of touring holidays, both in the UK and abroad.

Jillyanne Lamarra, show manager of the Scottish Motorhome, Caravan and Holiday Home Show, said the findings reflected trends already familiar to touring enthusiasts, noting that the flexibility of these trips allows travelers to “decide where, when, and how they go” without the pressures associated with flying.

For businesses in the caravan and RV industries, the research highlights potential opportunities to align products and services with this growing domestic demand.

Dealers and rental operators may see increased interest in motorhome and caravan sales, while touring sites, holiday parks, and private RV resorts could benefit from higher occupancy rates. Parks that cater to touring holidaymakers may consider emphasizing flexible bookings, pet-friendly policies, and on-site amenities that appeal to this audience.

The results also suggest that marketing strategies focusing on cost-conscious, flexible, and self-directed travel experiences could resonate with potential customers. Outdoor hospitality businesses may find value in partnering with caravan shows or RV dealers to attract touring holidaymakers and position their sites as convenient and accessible destinations.

Overall, the research underscores a continued shift toward domestic touring holidays in the UK, presenting potential growth opportunities for caravan and RV suppliers as well as outdoor accommodation providers who cater to this segment.
