Plans have been submitted to Wealden District Council for the installation of eight shepherd’s huts on agricultural land east of Jib Jacks Hill, Hartfield. The proposal also includes the construction of a commercial building to support the site’s operations.
The shepherd’s huts are intended to provide year-round glamping accommodation. Each hut, set on wheels, would remain permanently stationed and include self-contained living spaces with a kitchen and washing facilities. Landscaped areas surrounding the huts would offer outdoor amenity space for visitors.
A management plan accompanying the proposal outlines operational measures, including check-in times from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., restrictions on amplified music, and maintaining quiet after 10 p.m.
According to The Argus, the plan also sets rules for visitors, including prohibitions on hen and stag parties, fireworks, and Chinese lanterns.
Fires and barbecues would be restricted to designated areas, children would need to be supervised at all times, and dogs would be allowed only on leads. The management plan notes that non-compliance with these rules could result in termination of a stay after an initial warning.
The commercial building would include a reception and office area, secure and general storage, a kitchen for use by the camping facilities and training courses, and washroom facilities. An external canopy area is planned to provide space for cycle, log, and bin storage.
For safety and security, the application proposes low-level, low-luminance lighting near hut stairs. Visitors would be encouraged to use handheld battery-powered lamps or torches. A staff member is expected to be on-site during check-in and check-out periods to assist guests.
If approved, the development would add glamping capacity in the area and provide insights into operational management strategies relevant to small-scale outdoor hospitality businesses. The plan highlights how structured site rules, onsite management, and design features can balance guest experience with safety and local considerations.
