Plas Weunydd Reopens in North Wales After Two-Year Renovation

Plas Weunydd has reopened to visitors after undergoing a two-year refurbishment, resuming operations this Easter as a 24-bedroom hotel located in Blaenau Ffestiniog, North Wales.

Situated within the Llechwedd slate quarry, the property now serves as a central hub for a 2,000-acre site that includes glamping tents, shepherd’s huts, and a range of outdoor activities.

It caters to families, dog owners, mountain bikers, and walkers, providing a base near Antur Stiniog Bike Park and Eryri National Park, formerly known as Snowdonia.

The reopening marks a return to service for a building that was once the family home of the quarry owners.

It has been redeveloped as a design-forward, four-star hotel offering large rooms with views of the surrounding slate mountains, according to The i Paper

The hotel includes a restaurant and bar, both of which are dog-friendly. The restaurant serves pub-style meals with local ingredients, while the bar offers a selection of regional beverages such as Aber Falls’ orange marmalade gin, Black Mountain brandy, and Trulo coconut rum.

Guests have access to hiking trails from the hotel grounds, with additional routes located a short drive away. A hidden sauna near the glamping pods provides an additional amenity for overnight visitors.

Room rates begin at £69 per night, with accessible and pet-friendly options available. Wi-Fi and in-room workstations are included, appealing to visitors seeking a remote work-friendly location.

Nearby attractions include Zip World Llechwedd, where visitors can participate in adventure experiences such as Titan, Europe’s first four-person zip wire, as well as underground ziplining, a neon-lit golf course, and guided quarry and cavern tours.

The adjacent Antur Stiniog site features 14 mountain bike trails and the Burrito Blasus Blaenau café, which operates Thursday through Monday and hosts pop-up culinary events on a regular basis.

For businesses in the outdoor hospitality sector, Plas Weunydd offers a case study in combining heritage restoration with multi-format accommodation and adventure tourism.

Its diversified offering—spanning hotel, glamping, dining, and on-site attractions—illustrates a hybrid hospitality model that leverages both natural landscape and historic value.

Operators considering site expansion or repositioning may draw insights from how the property integrates family-friendly and adventure-oriented amenities with flexible lodging types to broaden its market reach.
