Planning Approved for Glamping and Wellness Retreat at Former Creek Fen Kart Track

Planning permission has been granted for the redevelopment of a former go-kart track at Creek Fen in March, Cambridgeshire, into a glamping and wellness retreat, marking a transition of the site from a recreational motorsport venue to a tourism-focused accommodation offering.

The approval allows the project to move forward, although a construction timeline and opening date have not yet been disclosed.

The proposal centers on converting the existing hardstanding into a nature-oriented setting, with plans that include luxury glamping accommodations alongside a wellness center.

According to project lead Debbie Diablo-Smith, the development will incorporate facilities such as a sauna, steam room, plunge pool, and treatment rooms, as well as relaxation spaces.

The wellness center is expected to be accessible not only to overnight guests but also to local residents, positioning the site as a hybrid offering that serves both tourism and community use.

A key component of the approved plans is a focus on biodiversity. The redevelopment will involve replacing paved surfaces with planting schemes and wildlife habitats, aligning the project with broader trends in environmentally conscious outdoor hospitality development.

Diablo-Smith indicated that the design aims to restore natural elements to the site while creating an environment that supports both ecological outcomes and visitor well-being.

She said the concept for the retreat draws on the surrounding Fenland landscape, particularly its sunrise and sunset views, which the development intends to incorporate into the guest experience.

In addition to accommodations, the project includes plans for wellness-focused programming such as day experiences, workshops, and activities designed to support physical and mental health.

“We’re also very grateful for the professional and proactive approach taken by Fenland District Council’s planning team throughout the process,” Diablo-Smith told CambsTimes. “The vision is to turn what was once a kart track into a peaceful retreat — a real transformation from tarmac to tranquillity.”

Diablo-Smith added that further details, including the project’s name and branding, will be announced as development progresses. “We will be revealing the name and branding shortly as the project develops,” she said, concluding, “I am extremely excited and passionate about this new venture.”

For operators and investors in the outdoor hospitality sector, the project reflects a continued shift toward integrating wellness amenities and environmental restoration into glamping developments.

The inclusion of facilities open to local residents may also indicate an emerging model that diversifies revenue streams while strengthening community engagement, particularly in rural or semi-rural markets where demand for wellness services may extend beyond overnight guests.
