Pinewood Park, located near Scarborough in North Yorkshire, has introduced a distinctive form of glamping accommodation by converting three decommissioned Sea King rescue helicopters into overnight lodgings.
The site claims to be the only location in the UK offering this style of accommodation, targeting guests seeking unique experiences within the growing outdoor hospitality market.
Each helicopter has been refurbished to serve as a glamping pod while maintaining its original cockpit, complete with authentic switches, dials, and levers.
According to a report by YorkMix, the aircraft is outfitted with a double bed, bunk beds, a fridge, a microwave, and an outdoor decking area.

According to the owners, the helicopters can accommodate up to five guests. One of the helicopters was formerly used in the Falkland Islands, while another was piloted by Prince William.
Kerry and Dave Woodhead, owners of Pinewood Park, oversee the site and continue to introduce distinctive offerings to attract visitors.
“We understand that even people who want an active holiday and are out and about all day still appreciate a chance to relax, so you can look forward to quietly chilling out under the stars with a glass of fizz,” Kerry said on Pinewood Park’s website.
In addition to the helicopter glamping pods, Pinewood Park features a range of accommodations, including units with private hot tubs, and regularly hosts guests attending weddings, group events, or looking for short leisure breaks.

For owners and operators in the outdoor hospitality sector, this concept reflects a broader trend toward experiential accommodations.
As competition increases, especially in the glamping and caravan industries, creative use of space and unusual lodging formats such as repurposed aircraft can help differentiate properties and generate media interest, social shares, and guest engagement.
Unique offerings may also justify higher nightly rates and attract niche markets such as aviation enthusiasts or families looking for themed stays.
The continued success of Pinewood Park’s helicopter units demonstrates how innovation and storytelling can play a role in boosting occupancy, enhancing guest satisfaction, and creating long-term brand value within the outdoor hospitality industry.
